Pet Steps

As your pet ages, you may find that they start having trouble jumping into and out of the car.  Since you occasionally need to take them places, like the vet, on vacations, or even joy rides, not being able to get in the car could be a big issue.  You can lift smaller pets into the car, but large dogs could cause strain on your back, if you can even lift them.

You may need to look into purchasing some pet steps.  They come in a variety of sizes to accomodate all pets.  When choosing a set of pet steps, there are a few options you need to consider.

  1. How high is your vehicle?  Make sure the overall height of the steps will get your dog into the vehicle safely.
  2. How much does your dog weigh?  There is a weight limit for each set of steps to ensure they are sturdy enough to hold your dog.
  3. How tall is your dog?  Pet steps come in different step heights as well.  If your dog is short, you will want to get steps that have a smaller step height, and depth.
  4. Will you also be using the steps in the house?  If so, check the width of the area where you will be putting the steps to make sure they will fit.

Pet steps aren’t only for dogs.  They can be used for any pet.  I used dogs as examples above, because they are more likely to be getting in and out of a vehicle on their own.  If you let your pets sleep on your bed, lounge on your couch, or maybe have cat’s food and water bowls elevated, pet steps are perfect for them too!

Pet Steps Aren’t Just for Dogs

Recently, a friend of mine was discussing how her older cat is starting to have trouble when jumping up onto, or down from the couch or bed.  She didn’t know what to do to help him, besides helping him up or down whenever she could.  But what about when she’s not home?  Someone mentioned pet steps, and she was floored.  She never thought of using them for her cat.

Pet steps come in a variety of sizes.  Steps made for smaller pets have a shorter step height for shorter legs.  And if your couch or bed is higher than the average, you can get a set that has more steps in general.  (Say, a 5 step set instead of 3).  The wide variety makes it easy to find the perfect set of pet steps for any of your furry friends.

Cat Cuddlers – How to Get Your Cat Used to a Pet Bed

Cats can be quite finnicky.  From the food you feed them, to the litter in their litterbox, they aren’t always thrilled when you throw something new into their routine.  This is especially true with new furniture.

Cat cuddler’s are pet beds for cats.  Once you get your cat to use it (if you happen to have a finnicky cat), they are sure to love it.  Here are some tips to get your cat to warm up to this new, foreign object you brought home:

  • Try to put the cuddler somewhere where they tend to nap most often. This can be complicated if your bed happens to be their nap spot.  In this case, put the cat cuddler on your bed, where they normally lay.  Give them a few days to get used to sleeping in it.  Then try moving it elsewhere.
  • Put 1 or 2 of their favorite toys in the bed.
  • Put some catnip in the bed.  Once they roll around in the catnip for a while, the bed will have their scent and this should make them feel right at home.
  • If you wash the cover, or buy a new one, keep in mind that they may not go back to sleeping in it right away.  In this case, you may have to start over with the toys and catnip to get them to sleep in it again.

Pet Steps Help Prevent Unnecessary Accidents

Small, aging, and disabled animals eventually have trouble getting around the house.  Especially to their favorite spots on the bed or couch, and getting into the car.

Pet steps give your pet the freedom to still get around, without you always having to help.  It also keeps them from having to jump down, or climb out of areas where they may fall and/or land on their paws wrong and hurt themselves.

Perfect for cats or dogs, pet steps come in many different styles and sizes.  Look around and find a set that is appropriate for the size of your pet, and tall enough to get them where they need to go.  You can most likely find some that match you’re decor as well.
