Cats will chase or climb into just about anything. Empty boxes become “hideouts”. A piece of fuzz becomes an object of obsession and “must be stopped”! Anything and everything can be a wonderful source of fun for your cat. You just need to make sure that what they choose to play with is not unsafe or harmful to them. Here are some quick tips to keep your cat happy, and safe while playing.
- Avoid anything a cat can swallow. This could be small balls, bells, pieces of foil or twist ties. It’s also a good idea to check any toys you buy for small pieces that can break off easily.
- Pet toys are not regulated, therefore they could possible contain toxic amounts of lead, expecially rubber toys. Check the labels and research the items online. Another idea is to just use kid’s toys. Just make sure there aren’t any glued on eyes or buttons that could fall off and choke your cat.
- Balls of string are not safe. Yes seriously. Your cat’s tongue is covered with sharp, backward-facing barbs that can catch on the string (or yarn) and make it difficult to spit it out. If your cat continues to swallow the string, this can cause internal blockage. (Beware of icicles and ribbon at Chrismastime.)
- Cats love to climb into things, and hide. If you can’t afford a cat condo, or don’t have the room, try an empty cardboard box or a paper bag. Just make sure to remove any handles so they don’t poke their head through and choke.
With a few precautions, you can spend many fun-filled hours with your cat for years to come.
